BreastCheck breast screening is free for women aged 50 to 69. It involves having a mammogram, which is an x-ray of the breast. It’s used to help find breast cancer when it is too small to see or feel.
We aim to offer free breast screening to every woman close to where she lives. Our mobile clinics stay in one place for up to two years at a time, depending on the number of women in that area who are due screening. Women who have been waiting the longest will get their appointment first. If you haven’t had your first BreastCheck screening, you can check you are on our register at BreastCheck.ie
When it’s time for your BreastCheck appointment, we’ll send you a letter with your appointment details. We’ll also send you a text message to confirm your appointment. Please let us know if you can’t attend. Filling every appointment will help us screen more women.
COVID-19 has delayed breast screening appointments by up to a year. For a time, Ireland will be in line with other countries, such as England, which screens every three years.
Reduce your risk of breast cancer
Around 1 in 4 cases of breast cancer could be prevented through changes to lifestyle and environmental factors.
Many different things can affect a woman’s chance (risk) of getting breast cancer. Some of these things we can’t change, such as age and family history, but some we can.
Lifestyle factors are things women can change to reduce their risk of breast cancer. These include cutting back on alcohol, being a healthy weight and getting enough exercise.
Medicines such as the oral contraceptive pill can increase a woman’s risk of breast cancer.
Choosing to breastfeed can reduce your risk of developing breast cancer.
Unfortunately some women will still get breast cancer. But we can all take steps to reduce our risk.
Early detection
Finding breast cancer early means you can be offered treatment at an early stage of the disease, when treatment options are better.
Screening is for well women who do not have symptoms. It is important for all women to check for lumps or physical changes in the shape, skin or size of their breasts. Because the risk of developing breast cancer increases with age, women over 50 need to be particularly aware. Cancer can occur at any time, including between your screening appointments. If you notice any changes, don’t wait for screening; please contact your GP without delay.
